Chris Bates was born and raised on Hilton Head Island. Chris's father was an architect and builder. Needless to say, Chris was swinging a hammer ever since he was old enough to hold one. He was in the middle of the the custom home builder era on Hilton Head during it's booming stage. As business slowed, he moved to Kiawah Island, SC 1981. Then in 1987, Chris got tired of building houses and went into the millwork business. After a career in the millwork industry, Chris found the love of his life in Heart Pine. The Charleston Bay Company was born in 1994 with Heart Pine in mind and has now grown into a full service operation offering turn-key pricing and many other species of wood other than heart pine.
