1) Why use heart pine?
Heart pine is a piece of the past. It is rich in color and rich in history. It has been used in flooring and in building for hundreds of years.
2) Where does heart pine come from?
Heart pine comes from the center of an old growth pine tree.
3) How is heart pine graded?
There has been no official grading rules for heart pine since 1924. We, at the Charleston Bay Company grade our heart pine by the percentage of heart pine per board, knot size and grain pattern.
4) Why will my floors change colors and get darker over the years?
The wood's classic amber to reddish-brown color comes from the resins, gums and other natural components within the tree that darken over time when exposed to light. Therefore, if you choose to put rugs over your wood floors, you will need to move the rug periodically to keep the color evenly distributed. This should be done during the first few years after the installation of your floors.
5) What is the difference in new heart pine and antique heart pine?
New heart pine is wood that is milled from the center of old growth pine trees. Our new heart pine comes primarily from Longleaf, Shortleaf and Loblolly pines.
Antique heart pine is reclaimed old timbers from buildings, warehouses and old factories. The timbers need to be de-nailed and re-sawed. The reclamation process is labor intensive, time consuming and costly.
6) What if I want really wide boards?
The Charleston Bay Company is able to supply wide plank antique and new heart pine flooring. However, supplies are limited so you will need to call for more details.
